THE BIG MOUNTAIN RUSH IS BACK BRINGING THE BEST IN FREESKI ACTION TO REVELSTOKE Mountain Resort

ColdRush_Logo-edited

After a two year hiatus, the biggest event in backcountry freeskiing returns to its roots. Fusing the disciplines of backcountry slopestyle, big mountain, cliffs and alpine ski touring, Red Bull Cold Rush will return to Canada from February 3-6 at Revelstoke Mountain Resort in British Columbia. The Red Bull Signature Series event will see a handful of the world’s premier skiers invited to battle it out for a chunk of the $36,000 prize purse awarded to the most versatile, well-rounded freeskiers.

The return of Red Bull Cold Rush means a blend of fresh powder and fresh ideas. Along with the new location in Revelstoke, the event is also being updated with fresh elements including innovative on-mountain features and a  competition format that places a greater focus on alpine touring. But one thing remains the same: the peer-judged three-day competition will see athletes pushing one another to raise the bar of backcountry freeski progression.
P-20120217-84660_News (1)
“Red Bull Cold Rush is the one and only top tier event that I, and all the other backcountry skiers, have to express our type of skills in a competition format. The fact that this amazing event is coming back to Canada just gets me all fired up! It’s where I spend my winter doing what we do, so I’ll be right at home this year” says Sean Pettit, professional backcountry freeskier and two-time winner of Red Bull Cold Rush in 2010 and 2011.

HISTORY OF RED BULL COLD RUSH

In an event that pits man against nature, nature always has the upper hand. Born and bred in Canada, the first ever Red Bull Cold Rush was set to take place in 2007 at Red Mountain in Rossland, BC, but Mother Nature had other ideas. Due to warm temperatures and a deep freeze that followed, the terrain was deemed unsafe to ski. When the event returned to the mountain in 2008, it was a skiers’ dream come true. Blue skies and deep snow greeted some of the best freeskiers in the world. Dave Treadway ended up at the top of the podium followed by Sean Pettit in 2nd and the late JP Auclair in 3rd.

In 2009 and 2010, the event moved to Retallack, BC pushing riders further and into new and challenging territory. A year later, Red Bull Cold Rush moved south of the border for the first US event held at Silverton, Colorado where it remained for a second year into 2012.
P-20120306-00109_News (1) REVELSTOKED! THE MOUNTAIN

Even in the powder-heaven that is the BC Interior, Revelstoke was a stand-out destination and obvious choice to play host for the return of Red Bull Cold Rush. Revelstoke Mountain Resort boasts the most vertical in North America at 5,620 ft. of lift accessed terrain, two alpine bowls and legendary glades. The only resort worldwide to offer lift, cat, heli and backcountry access from one village base, it has become a true ski mecca and synonymous with backcountry adventure.
>
“This is the perfect event for us because it showcases all we have to offer – our diverse terrain, excellent conditions and all the challenging vertical and features they could event want” says Revelstoke Mountain Resort General Manager Rob Elliott.

On average, the mountain’s peak receives roughly 30-45 ft. of the fluffy stuff every year. For those in search of the white room, the high altitude and location in BC’s Interior Selkirk Mountains brings some of the most consistent quality snow in the region.

RMR - Ian Houghton 4PEER PRESSURE: EVENT FORMAT

There’s nothing more important than impressing your friends, and that is exactly what the premier field of 15 men and 5 women will do throughout the peer-judged event as athletes aim to raise the bar of backcountry freestyle progression.  Following each run, competitors will evaluate one another on performance basing scores on style, speed and technique.

Spread across three powder-laden days, the competition focuses on several distinct ski disciplines including backcountry slopestyle, big mountain, cliffs and alpine touring in order to find the best all-around freeskier. Each day of competition will focus on one specific discipline, with a new emphasis on the ski touring component that will see athletes traversing to different areas of the mountain in the shortest possible time. Athletes will now be able to accumulate more points through the touring portion, helping to offset potentially lower scores in other disciplines that might not be their strong suit.

The Sutton Place Hotel Revelstoke Mountain Resort Has Endless Snow Fun

Revelstoke1

It may be hard to believe, but not everyone in the world excels at skiing and snowboarding. A well timed fall on a hard icy surface can be enough to send even the most enthusiastic learner packing – but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other fun snow activities to pursue!

If you’re heading up to The Sutton Place Hotel Revelstoke Mountain Resort this season, and skiing or snowboarding is not your forte, or you simply want to enjoy some family fun, then there is a new park that may pique your interest.

Specially designed to offer users the most thrilling tubing experience available, Turtle Creek Beginner Area & Tube Park features three lanes of snow tubing heaven chock-full of slopes, plateaus, and fast riding fun. The park is family-friendly, yet provides an exciting sliding experience that rivals even the best hillside fun. Open both day and night, it’s the ideal spot for a little pre and post dinner snow amusement.

tubing2

A Convenient Lift Too!

Another perk to the park is its ease of access. Built with functionality in mind, tubers can ride all the way down to the new Magic Carpet lift, and get easy access to their next tube run – saving on the mountain climbing and allowing for more downhill fun time.

The new 175m Magic Carpet lift sits adjacent to the Revelation Gondola line, from the village station, making it the perfect blend of convenience and location for those staying in the village.

A Little Practice Goes a Long Way

However, if you want to give skiing and snowboarding a second go, then we highly recommend Turtle Creek’s Beginner Area. Not just an average hill, the Beginner Area was designed specifically to enhance the different learning phases of a new skier or snowboarder.

Using a ‘progressive pitch,’ the slope features 5%, 10%, and 15% pitch variances that allow learners to gradually increase their difficulty levels as they advance their skills. In addition, the area is less than 50 steps away from the snow school at the Revelstoke Outdoors Centre, making expert guidance just a slide away.

No matter your favourite snow sport, you’ll always find a wealth of activities to do at Revelstoke Mountain Resort. With inches of snow already, the season is proving to be most promising indeed, which is why The Sutton Place Hotel Revelstoke Mountain Resort has exclusive (family) packages for the season. After all, if there’s one thing that skiers, snowboarders, tubers and sliders have in common, it’s the desire to bundle up by a luxuriously cozy room with a delicious hot beverage in hand after a long day spent in the snow.

A Sutton Guide to Seasonal Shopping in Vancouver

Shopping1

There are an unlimited number of sights and sounds to see in downtown Vancouver on any given day. Whether it’s views of snow-capped mountains and the majestic Stanley Park seawall in Coal Harbour, or fiery pink sunsets and sandy beaches in English Bay, the variety here is endless. In fact, so vast is the diversity in downtown Vancouver that it comes as a shock to most people when you tell them that the entire contents of the compact metropolis fit within a two to three kilometre radius.

Surrounded by sea on three sides, you can jaunt from shore to shore in record time, and likely, you’ll also notice that each exciting district has a completely different personality from the next. In addition, all of them are just brimming with stunning sights, cultural flavours, and, most importantly (for this time of year), shopping districts to enjoy.

Whether you are looking for chic brand name designers, hidden local gems or some of the best vintage finds around, this city has it all – and with the holidays just around the corner, we’ve compiled an insider’s list of the best stores, districts, and hideaways that money can buy.

Where to Start

Set in the heart of the city, it’s no surprise that The Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver has a keen eye for the best retailers around. All you need to discover these great areas is your best pair of shopping shoes and a taste for hot trends and sleek styles. Then, simply step outside our doors and begin the fabulous journey that is downtown Vancouver.

Robson Street

robsonst

Crowned as Vancouver’s most popular shopping street, this colourful area boasts some of the most famous top-tier labels around, in addition to spectacular Canadian brands – perfect for visitors looking for Canuck couture to bring home. Some of the top highlights include Vancouver’s flagship Coach store, Louis Vuitton, Salvatore Ferragamo, Zara, Banana Republic, Aldo, and Camper.

For great Canadian buys, famous homegrown names here include: Roots, B2 (a trendy version of Browns), Aritzia, Lululemon, Club Monaco (founded by Canadians Alfred Sung and Joe Mimran) and La Senza.

The best part about this district, however, is the compact efficiency it provides for shoppers with limited time. All aforementioned stores exist within a three block radius, along with a host of other popular brands, restaurants, and ever increasing number of cafes (in case you didn’t know – Vancouverites love their coffee).

Granville Street

granville1

Historic Granville Street has been home to a whirlwind of changes over the century. From the heart of entertainment during the roaring twenties, to grunge central in the eighties, and now the center of Vancouver’s eccentric entertainment, arts and retro scene, you can definitely find unique finds here.

Among the most popular stores are: Urban Outfitters, Joe Fresh (also opened by Canadian style icon Joe Mimran), John Fleuvog (also Canadian), Bedo(also Canadian), Future Shop, Winners, and iconic shopping centre – Pacific Centre Mall – home to Holt Renfrew and a barrage of over 90 of North America’s most popular brands.

Not to be outdone, Granville Street also has a wide range of chic retro vintage and second hand stores including Cherry Bomb, The Hanging Rose and Used House of Vintage.

Gastown

Gastown1

As Vancouver’s most historic neighbourhood, this district is home to some of the coolest shopping around. Imagine high-end independent designers that you can’t get anywhere else, housed inside historically preserved Victorian buildings and lofts, sitting upon cobble stone streets while being lit by old fashioned gas lamp posts (all fitted with modern-day light bulbs thankfully). Plus, the cherry on top? A real live steam clock that puffs away like it was built yesterday.

There are over 180 shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars in this community, and if you’re looking to find unique finds, then this is the place to go. Among some of the most popular stores are: Roden Gray, Dutil, New World Designs, Ego Closet, Haven, Hitz Boutique, Dream Apparel, Anti-Hero, Productions and, for the deal seeker, Army & Navy – famous for their annual shoe sale.

Yaletown

yaletown1

Much like Gastown, Yaletown has distinct elements of its history blended into its hip presence. Once Vancouver’s former industrial shipping yard, it used to be dominated by warehouses, rail yards, and shipping businesses. Then the area underwent a revolution with Expo ‘86, and has since transformed into one of the poshest neighbourhoods around. You’ll find in abundance here Concord Pacific high rise apartments, revamped warehouse lofts, original brick facades and glamorous young professionals from corner to corner.

Popular shopping picks include: Fine Finds, Atomic Model, Basquait, Mala Kuja Moda, Mavi, Babe Belangere Boutique and Revolucion.

Whatever fashion find you may be looking for this season, downtown Vancouver makes a great pick for all your shopping needs. Plus, if you’re brave enough to tackle all neighbourhoods in one day, rest assured that our Sutton Place Hotel will be waiting for you to rest your weary – but stylishly attired – feet.

The Sutton Place Revelstoke Mountain Resort Gears Up for Winter Excitement

Revelstoke1

With the winter season approaching quickly, the Sutton Place Hotel Revelstoke Mountain Resort is giddy with anticipation over the flurry of activities lined up for the snowy season. From world-class competitions to exciting camps and retreats, skiers and snowboarders are sure to find their fill at RMR in 2013.

The Return of the Freeride World Tour in 2013

January 7 – 12

As one of the world’s biggest ski and snowboard events, the Swatch Freeride World Tour is guaranteed to showcase some of the best winter athletes in the world.

Even better, for 2013, the Swatch Freeride World Tour is joining forces with The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, to create the new “Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face.”

The tour has an exclusive tour circuit (only 6 resorts in the world have been selected to participate), with Revelstoke Mountain Resort standing as the only Canadian resort to host the event in 2013. Revelstoke Mountain Resort was also the proud host for last year’s 5-star championship event, and received high praise from organizers and athletes alike. Famed skier Drew Tabke said of the venue:

“The best event last year was the combined event at Revelstoke. This event represented the ideal outcome of this merger of the two tours – a legitimate representation of the world’s best riders competing on a world-class venue.”

Sure to entice enthusiasts from around the world, there will be so much to see on and off the mountain, so make sure you make your reservations far in advance!

New Heli Ski Camps to Hit the Slopes with Pro Power

If you’ve ever wanted lessons from a pro, then Revelstoke’s New Heli Ski Camps are right up your alley. The Heli Ski Camps have recruited some of the biggest talent in the world, including professional Salomon athletes Chris Rubens and Leah Evans. The two skilled experts will provide an array of specialty programs on the mountain, which they know well from their experiences during the Freeride World Tour – Revelstoke’s signature athletic event.

With many avid skiers jumping to book the camps, the events and their guest coaches are creating a huge interest for the mountain resort – so much so that a second Women’s Retreat has been set up already. Chloë Lanthier, director & owner of the X-Training School and an accomplished world class endurance athlete will spearhead the second Women’s Retreat – which is sure to be a huge hit.

Those seeking a journey unlike any other can also sign up for a specialty excursion with 1994 Canadian Olympic Gold Medallist – Men’s Moguls, Jean Luc Brassard. Brassard will head the 6-day trip at Revelstoke from March 30-April 6, 2013 through Voyages Gendron and will guide students through  lift skiing and 3 days of heli skiing with Selkirk Tangiers. It’s guaranteed to be a once in a life time experience with some of the most breathtaking scenery and powder in the world.
