O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

What is a Canadian? A Canadian is a fellow wearing English tweeds, a Hong Kong shirt, and Spanish shoes who sips Brazilian coffee sweetened with Philippine sugar from a Bavarian cup while nibbling Swiss cheese, sitting at a Danish desk over a Persian rug, after coming home in a German car from an Italian movie all with a smile on his face saying, “What a great day, eh?”

No matter where you’re from, or what you believe in, we can all agree  Canada is our, “True North strong and free.”

To Dads Everywhere, Happy Father’s Day

Father's DayAccording to history, when Sonora Smart Dodd’s father passed away in 1909, she wanted to honour him for raising six children as a single parent. To say thank you, she chose to celebrate his love in June because that’s when his birthday was. Little did she know that 15 years later, in 1924, her initiative would lead American president Calvin Coolidge to proclaim the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

Today, countries around the world celebrate this holiday on different days. Spain, along with the majority of European countries celebrates on March 19, while Latin America follows the American tradition of the third Sunday in June. Though the dates and celebrations differ by country, what remains the same is the spirit of family.

In Spain, since the Catholic Church holds a significant influence, Father’s Day is celebrated on St. Joseph’s Day, which falls on March 19. St. Joseph’s Day is a Roman Catholic feast holiday to commemorate the life of the patron saint of carpenters, Joseph, who set the example of fatherhood as the foster father of Jesus.

Canna FlowerIn Thailand, Father’s Day is celebrated on December 5, the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyade who is very much beloved by the Thais. Tradition is that everyone wears yellow on Father’s Day, the official colour of Monday, the day of the week the King was born. Children begin the day by presenting their fathers with a Canna flower, which is considered to be a masculine plant.

In Japan, children give their fathers handmade beer glasses, Japanese candies or sweets, or sandals. Lunch or dinner usually involves crab, prawns, or other seafood.

Father's Day Gift

Similar to a typical Father’s Day celebration in Canada, South African children present their fathers with gifts such as flowers, cards, and ties. People in South Africa often enjoy picnics on Father’s Day or spend the afternoon fishing in hopes of securing a catch for dinner.

Our Edmonton Hotel Gives Everyone ‘A Taste of Christmas’

For many, the holiday season signifies the beginning of a long process involving planning, prepping, mashing, whipping, basting and baking – all in the name of creating the perfect Christmas dinner. In the world of sugar and spice and everything nice, this perfect dinner consists of having all your turkey and stuffing prepared weeks in advance, while still having countless free time to entertain your guests as everything warms magically in the oven.

However, though we’d all like to put on our best Julia Child impression for the season, the truth is that for most of us, preparing the big holiday feast is something akin to a Mr. Bean episode, complete with comical mishaps, scrapes, burns, laughs, tears and all.
Not to worry though, there are other alternatives to cooking during the holidays, and our Sutton Place Hotel in Edmonton is one such example.

From December 11th – 14th & 18th – 21st, you can indulge in a traditional dinner with all the fixings, held in the elegant setting of our Grande Ballroom. The Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver Gets Glamorous for VIFF’S Annual Red Carpet Film Party

September 29th was all about style and silver screen sizzle at our Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver two weeks ago. Put together by Lighthouse Pictures, a local independent film company, and JetSet Crew, Vancouver’s premier event planning company,  the red carpet event featured the likes of Hollywood North’s most popular stars including: Gabrielle Miller (Moving Day, Call Me Fitz), Nicholas Lea (Crimes of Mike Recket), Roger Cross, Terry Chen (Continuum), Amanda Tapping, Zak Santiago (Random Acts of Romance), Adam Beach, the cast of Artic Air, Once Upon A Time, Motive, Falling Skies, Emily Owens, M.D. and many many more.

Enthusiastic Sutton Place Hotel Manager, Navid Sariolghalam, was onsite to witness all the star power first hand and had this to say of the successful event:

“The Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver has always been a ‘home away from home’ to the stars because of our dedication to providing unparalleled luxury accommodations and friendly service.  We are proud to host Vancouver’s most prized film festival red carpet event every year because many of our guests come from this industry and have become like family to us. Plus it’s always a fun time!”

Hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Rick Campanelli, the hotel was packed with actors, directors, industry insiders and everyone in-between, all of whom got to experience The Sutton Place Hotel standard of luxury along with specially-made Belvedere martinis which were appropriately a ravishing red colour.

Party goers also had extra reason to indulge in their drinks because Belvedere Vodka and its Special Edition Bottles gave 50% of their profits to the Global Fund to fight HIV/ AIDS in Africa. In 2011 alone, contributions of these sales of (Belvedere) RED provided more than two million days of life-saving HIV/AIDS medicine.

Glamour, glitz and goodwill? We couldn’t have asked for a better ‘cocktail’ to kick off the Vancouver International Film Festival.

The Sutton Place Hotel Edmonton Gets Shopper Savvy

Like all of our Sutton Place Hotels, our Edmonton hotel is ideally situated to create a host of conveniences for our guests. Set directly in the center of the city, just a stone’s throw away Sir Winston Churchill Square and the bustling downtown Edmonton Arts & Entertainment District, it’s guaranteed that on any given day of the week, you’ll be entreated to an endless volume of metropolitan sights and sounds during your stay.

Even if you’re just stopping in for a short visit, we are connected by an indoor pedway to the Edmonton City Centre Mall, making shopping literally easier than walking out the front door.

Which brings us to the biggest new benefit about being set in the centre of the city: following suit after The Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver’s successful program launch, our Edmonton location now has its very own Sutton Shopper Program.

Offering up to 40% off selected retailers at City Centre Mall, the popular guest program is perfect for everyone from guests who are picking up presents for home to visitors who need a little relaxing retail therapy.

Hailed as downtown Edmonton’s most popular mall, City Centre features everything high-end designer fashion to convenient everyday retail needs.

Just in time for the coming winter, we’re guessing there will be plenty of reason to stay indoors this season – which is good because shopping outdoors in 4 inch stilettos during minus 30 temperatures can be pretty difficult.

The Sutton Place Hits the Road with the Luxury & Supercar Weekend – Shaughnessy Concours d’ Elegance

Though Vancouver is famed for the beauty of its nature, lush outdoor scenery and irreplaceable West Coast sea breeze, it does also celebrate the splendor of more ‘material/mehanical’ pursuits as well.

Take a drive down Robson Street, through Coal Harbour or Yaletown, and you’ll likely find several steely gems, ranging from Mercedes convertibles to top of the line Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

While you can hunt through affluent neighborhoods for a peek at the ultimate driving fantasy, one stop at the Luxury & Supercar – Shaughnessy Concours d’Elegance guarantees that you’ll hit the mother lode all in one go – which is exactly what thousands of excited car enthusiasts did this past weekend.

Held at Vancouver’s VanDusen Botanical Garden, this year’s showcase featured the largest and most valuable collection of supercars and luxury brands to date. Always happy to be part of Vancouver’s social scene, our very own Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver was also there to take part in all the fun with our very own custom luxury chalet.

Under a canopy of lush garden beauty, we offered all event goers a relaxing atmosphere to lounge in, complete with cosy couches, floral displays, cucumber water and delicious deserts all exclusively made by our Executive Chef, Michael Deutsch.

Raspberry Shortcake & Peanut Butter Crunch

For the two-day event, our chalet was jam packed with car aficionados who were able to see remarkable collections such as the ‘50 Years of Bond Cars’ selection (which featured every single car from all of the bond movies … ever!) and the more nostalgic ‘20s and ’30s inspired ‘Great Gatsby’ collection. There were also several Canadian cars on display too, most notably the HTT Pléthore, a highly anticipated Canadian-built luxury car that oozes high-end appeal.Everyone was also able to preview new 2013 models and classic collectibles from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ferrari, Maserati, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Bentley, Aston Martin, Porsche, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover, Alfa Romeo, Fisker, Tesla, Spyker, Lexus, Cadillac, Lincoln and Bugatti.

Though cars were the stars, onlookers looking for a bit of diversity were not disappointed. The event also featured modern and classic motorcycles, luxury boats, private jet helicopters and Vancouver’s largest outdoor designer fashion stage too. Exceptional designer outfits were seen by Blumarine, Etro, Gianni Brun, Giambattista Valli, Issey Miyake, John Varvatos, M & FGirbaud, MaxMara, Missoni, Moncler, Neil Barrett, Pal Zileri, Thomas Wyle, Valentino, Jacqueline Conoir, JAC and Malene Grotrian.

For every minute of the excitement, our friendly staff were on hand to meet and greet all the event participants – many of whom shared with us fond memories and experiences our hotel. Everyone who stopped by was also encouraged to enter our ‘Luxury Package’ giveaway which includes a luxury one-night stay at The Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver, our famous ‘Lobster, Beef & Chocolate’ dinner, and a delicious full breakfast the next morning.

A tremendously successful affair, we’re glad that Vancouverites now have a fun luxury car event to call their own, and if you don’t believe all the hype, then simply look at our photos below. They say it all.

This is a preview of our luxury chalet in the VIP area in one of Vancouver’s classiest event, Luxury & Supercar Weekend – Shaughnessy Concours d’Elegance. We simply cannot wait for everyone to see what is behind that curtain but it is nothing less than luxurious.

Debuting high-end fashion, elegant lifestyle, and of course, luxury cars, this event is definitely going to be magnificent!
