Girls Do Ski

Written by Selkirk Tangiers Heli Skiing

There’s this feeling that goes hand in hand with the experience of enjoying a favourite pastime with a group of friends – it’s a pretty amazing combination of freedom and joy. But when that group of friends consists of all guys or all gals, it transforms into something truly special. The term ‘let loose’ sums it up pretty well. There’s a feeling that you can do anything and push the limits of what you thought was possible just by being part of a group of like-minded individuals. We LOVE this feeling. So much so that we’ve teamed up with Girls Do Ski again this winter to bring back one of our favourite events of the season, our Girls Do Ski heli-ski weekend.

We got in touch with Katie Marti, Media Relations at Girls Do Ski, to hear her thoughts on this event: “Heli-skiing is the ultimate freeski adventure, so, naturally, this is one of our most anticipated camps of the season. All of our guests have skied resorts before and some have even toured around in the backcountry, but very few have had the opportunity to spend a day heli-skiing – much less with an entire crew of super supportive, incredible women. It’s bucket list material. This year, we’ve also added an extra day to the program, so that guests have a chance to acclimatize and do a bit of on-mountain prep at Revelstoke Mountain Resort before heading out in the heli with Selkirk Tangiers on Day Two. We’re stoked because we truly believe the full weekend experience will allow ladies more time to connect with our coaches and will leave everyone feeling confident and enthusiastic for the season ahead.”

Meghan Tabor from Revelstoke Tourism recounted her experiences from last season in her blogpost, and summed it up best: “…What I’ll never forget is the smiles on those Girls Day Out campers after conquering their heli-day. Exhaustion began to set in, but spirits remained high right up until the very last turn. As the chopper lowered us back down into the clouds, thoughts were on Mt. Begbie brew and après – to relive the moments that will inevitably last for a lifetime. I know it’s a day I’ll never forget.”

Watch the video from last year’s winter camp to get a taste of what it’s all about.

We’re flying with this package on January 10 & 11, 2015, with Saturday January 10 happening on the slopes of Revelstoke Mountain Resort and Sunday January 11 heading into the hills with our STHS Bell 205 helicopter. Powder on the Menu — Revelstoke Mountain Resort Opening Weekend

As the snow continues to fall on Mt. Mackenzie, Revelstoke Mountain Resort is preparing to open November 29th amidst excellent early season conditions.

With over 270 cm of snow already, and a further 30-40 cm forecast before opening day, the 2014/15 season will be kicking off with a base of over 115 cm and enough powder to go around.

“Things are looking awesome! With all the new snow we will be opening top to bottom, giving skiers and snowboarders access to all 5620 ft of vertical,” says Mike Verwey, Mountain Operations Manager.

“Looking at the forecast, what is going to make this even better than past opening days is that we are going to have amazing visibility… after all the snow comes down, it is going to clear up and be bluebird for Saturday.”

One hundred per cent of the lifts on the mountain will be operational for the first day of the season, giving skiers and snowboarders access to nearly all of the 3,121 acres of inbound terrain.

With all that untouched powder being served up, Steve Bailey, Director of Skier Services and Base Area Operations says, “be prepared for Saturday to feel like heli-skiing, but for the price of a lift ticket.”

Lifts will start operating at 8:30am on Saturday, with the last ride on the Ripper at 2:30pm and on the Stoke at 3pm.

The Sutton Place Hotel Revelstoke Mountain Resort couldn’t be more excited for the 2014/15 season!

South West Snow

David Jackson Photo (1 of 14)

In the ski town of my mind, the weather is blue and rainy, the town is sleepy, yet a vibe constantly thrums and a presence looms over the town. Like a heartbeat fueled by snow, everyone knows what blue weather means, and, suddenly, a rainy day becomes the perfect anticipation for the best phrase in any turn hungry town: Powder Day.

This winter has been a struggle across much of North America’s ski towns to find a weather system pushing snow and averting dry weather. It’s been a race to find any sort of tracks which one could call their own and it seems reluctance and skepticism took the driver’s seat over faith towards the powder pilgrimage. The winter has been slow with snow falls remaining few and far between, even in places typically rife with snow, the weather seems to be following this trend… Frankly, the past few seasons have been this way and the places which receive notable snow are sending up full chair after full chair. I shy away from long lines and short runs because I know of the perfect place with a huge vertical descent and almost non-existent lines. The best part is that each season, a storm system comes off the South West and hands snow graciously to Mt. Mackenzie and Revelstoke Mountain Resort.

Each run, you are surrounded by not just friends but people enthused about being on a big mountain. Runs can be fast but if you want to stop, relax, and enjoy the peace of the trees, then it’s guaranteed your friends will be there.  I can’t say that I have chased snow across the west and I would be lying if I said that I’ve skied all over the world. But one thing that is for sure, Revelstoke has a pull that I nor any of my friends have felt.

The snow seems to never end, the lines are always quick, and above all else, the people are local and friendly. It’s the sort of community which can only be found in a small mountain town with a big mountain attitude. If you’re looking for that right place to divide your time in the winter and you want a small community to stray from the mindset of a visitor to a friendly local, make your pilgrimage to Revelstoke.

Vote for Revelstoke Mountain Resort in the Ski Town Throwdown

ski_and_ski_2013“Skiing is a dance, and the mountain always leads.”

Revelstoke Mountain Resort boasts North America’s greatest vertical at 1,713 metres (5,620 ft). The resort offers 3,121 acres of fall line skiing, high alpine bowls, renowned gladed terrain, and endless groomers. It is also the only resort world-wide to offer lift, cat, heli, and backcountry skiing from one village base.

As Revelstoke Mountain Resort heads into its 7th season of operations, the resort will open at the end of November (tentatively set to open on November 30, 2013).

SPH_Revelstoke_ExteriorIn mid-winter 2012, The Sutton Place Hotel was introduced to what was previously known as the Nelsen Lodge. The third phase of the luxury condo-hotel was completed in February 2012, almost doubling the occupancy with an additional 107 condo-hotel rooms (total 222). With the new phase, a brand new outdoor, year-round pool, and hot tubs opened to hotel guests as well as a spacious, fully-equipped fitness studio while expanded services to the hotel included a wine & cheese guest reception, dedicated concierge, après-ski yoga sessions, and child care.

Revelstoke Mountain ResortUpon completion, the Resort will offer more than 20 lifts and over 100 ski and snowboard runs, transforming the area into a world-class destination. The four-season resort will include over 5,000 new housing units (1,500 resort condominiums, 2,000 hotel suites, 850 townhomes, and 550 single-family lots), as well as more than 500,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, plus a resort-style golf course.

On-mountain, the Turtle Creek Beginner Area and Tube Park opened for the first time in January 2012 and was well received by guests of all ages. The Kids’ Revelstoke Outdoors Centre, activity centre and snow school also in its inaugural year, was a great success and made good use of the new base area beginner slope. Introductory snowmaking on the lower mountain made a significant difference in the quality of the snow base and its longevity, enhancing the ski experience on lower mountain trails and the new Turtle Creek Beginner Area & Tube Park.

To enhance the Revelstoke Mountain Resort experience, the following additional features will be available for the 2013/2014 winter season:

  • Improved Ninja Traverse – The Ninja Traverse has been Sumo Sized! They’ve widened and groomed this trail to provide an easy and smooth return to the base of the Stoke Chair.
  • 007 Upgrade – 007 has been remodeled with a cut-through run to improve access to Mid-Mountain Lodge.
  • Snowmaking – Upgraded to improve lower mountain skiing and Village access.
  • Better Beginner Terrain – Greenhorn and The Last Spike have been widened and realigned from top to bottom for improved skiing. In addition, a widened access trail provides more green skiing options on Lower Mountain.
  • Faster Opening – New bomb tram installed at the Sweet Spot entrance to North Bowl to provide faster opening times on powder days.
  • Run Additions – Two new runs are being developed off the Stoke Chair.
  • Glades Galore! – Tasty Glades and Rollercoaster area (now Tally-Ho Glades) have been aggressively gladed for similar spacing to The Ripper glades. The Stoke base has improved visibility and access.
  • Mid-Mountain Lodge is now “Revelation Lodge” – New management has brought new menu options to Revelation Lodge.
  • Wino Renamed “The Village Tavern” – Reimagined for 2013 / 2014, enjoy a new après experience at the Resort Village Base.
  • Snowshoe Tours – Available daily from the top of the Gondola!
  • Calgary Shuttle – Dedicated shuttle bus operations all winter from Calgary International Airport (YYC).
  • FREE Family Fun – Free tubing all winter for Season Pass holders. They’re also continuing the Tot/Chaperone program which provides parents with a complimentary lift ticket when skiing with children aged 5 and under.

RMR1In November’s issue of Powder Magazine, they ranked the top 64 places to ski powder in North America based on Powder Per Person (or P3), which took into account things like vertical, snowfall, and skiable acreage. These rankings were used as a way to seed each of the 16 ski areas per region in a 64-team March Madness-style bracket, called Ski Town Throwdown.

The initial evaluation was done by Powder Magazine, using the P3 rating, and Revelstoke Mountain Resort easily made it past the first round. But now your help is needed to beat Whitewater in Nelsen, BC – they won the final competition last year and it’s going to be close to beat them in the next round of voting! Round 2 voting happens for 24 hours only and is on Halloween – October 31.

To vote, go to Facebook.com/PowderMag on October 31 and vote for Revelstoke Mountain Resort. Mark your calendars!

The Sutton Place Revelstoke Mountain Resort Gears Up for Winter Excitement

From world-class competitions to exciting camps and retreats, skiers and snowboarders are sure to find their fill at RMR in 2013.

The Return of the Freeride World Tour in 2013

January 7 – 12

As one of the world’s biggest ski and snowboard events, the Swatch Freeride World Tour is guaranteed to showcase some of the best winter athletes in the world.

Even better, for 2013, the Swatch Freeride World Tour is joining forces with The North Face Masters of Snowboarding, to create the new “Swatch Freeride World Tour by The North Face.”

The tour has an exclusive tour circuit (only 6 resorts in the world have been selected to participate), with Revelstoke Mountain Resort standing as the only Canadian resort to host the event in 2013. Revelstoke Mountain Resort was also the proud host for last year’s 5-star championship event, and received high praise from organizers and athletes alike. Famed skier Drew Tabke said of the venue:

“The best event last year was the combined event at Revelstoke. This event represented the ideal outcome of this merger of the two tours – a legitimate representation of the world’s best riders competing on a world-class venue.”

Sure to entice enthusiasts from around the world, there will be so much to see on and off the mountain, so make sure you make your reservations far in advance!

New Heli Ski Camps to Hit the Slopes with Pro Power

If you’ve ever wanted lessons from a pro, then Revelstoke’s New Heli Ski Camps are right up your alley. The Heli Ski Camps have recruited some of the biggest talent in the world, including professional Salomon athletes Chris Rubens and Leah Evans. The two skilled experts will provide an array of specialty programs on the mountain, which they know well from their experiences during the Freeride World Tour – Revelstoke’s signature athletic event.

With many avid skiers jumping to book the camps, the events and their guest coaches are creating a huge interest for the mountain resort – so much so that a second Women’s Retreat has been set up already. Chloë Lanthier, director & owner of the X-Training School and an accomplished world class endurance athlete will spearhead the second Women’s Retreat – which is sure to be a huge hit.

Those seeking a journey unlike any other can also sign up for a specialty excursion with 1994 Canadian Olympic Gold Medallist – Men’s Moguls, Jean Luc Brassard. Brassard will head the 6-day trip at Revelstoke from March 30-April 6, 2013 through Voyages Gendron and will guide students through  lift skiing and 3 days of heli skiing with Selkirk Tangiers. It’s guaranteed to be a once in a life time experience with some of the most breathtaking scenery and powder in the world.
